Year 3 Large Animal Hospital Practicum

Several changes have been incorporated in the Large Animal Hospital Practicum for the first 3 years of the curriculum in the 2002-2003 academic year. The changes that apply to students in the third year of the curriculum are as follows:

1) Name change:The course previously known as "Clerk Duty" is now called "Large Animal Hospital Practicum." It remains a separate course for Year 3, but has been folded into Clinical Skills for Years 1 and 2.

2) Hospitals involved: Students will only rotate through the Large Animal Hospital. The Small Animal Hospital is not involved in this course.

3) Participants: This course is core for all students in Year 3.

4) Durations: The course continues through March 20th, 2003

5) Skill confirmation: Each year will have their own check list of skills that must be completed and returned to Anna Jones by March 21st, 2003. The check list for year 3 is provided below.

Year 3 LAHP Skill Check List

A check list of clinical skills has been included as a requirement for students in the Large Animal Hospital Practicum for Years 1-3. Juniors must complete all tasks in a satisfactory manner and return the completed sheet to Anna Jones in 225 VTH before March 21st, 2003. To be considered "completed", each task must be signed off on by a supervising technician or clinician. As a junior, satisfactory performance indicates that you performed the task without prompting or instruction from a technician or clinician. It may be necessary for you to practice one or more procedures several times with help before you are ready to demonstrate your ability to perform the task unaided. Just let the available supervisor know when you are ready to perform the task on your own. You may try as many times as needed to complete the task successfully as long as you are able to complete all tasks before March 21st. If the opportunity arises for you to demonstrate competency in a specific skill outside of your assigned LAH Practicum sessions, you may obtain a supervising signature at anytime.

As clinicians, you will continually need to teach your staff and clients how to perform common tasks. Therefore, juniors have the additional task of teaching 1st and 2nd year students some of the basic skills required of you during the LAH Practicum. Effective instruction requires that you understand the skill well, that you are able to communicate effectively, that you consider all safety aspects of the procedure, that you are able to answer questions about the procedure, that you can anticipate all materials required for the procedure, that you can assess your "student's" progress, and that you can provide effect feedback in a positive and objective manner. You will be considered to have effectively taught a skill when your "student" demonstrates the ability to perform the task under your supervision. You must first demonstrate that you can perform the specific task satisfactorily before you can demonstrate that you can teach the skill (i.e., someone must have signed off on your performance of the skill first).

The skills are provided below:
